STOCKTON, Calif. -- A popular Stockton priest has resigned from the priesthood after fathering a child.
58-year old Father Dean McFalls has resigned as pastor of St. Mary's Church. McFalls has not been defrocked but is no longer able to perform his duties as a priest. In a letter to his congregation McFalls said, quote," I assume full responsibility for my actions and will do all I can so that my child receives the care and love that he deserves."
The Diocese of Stockton says McFalls has been replaced on an interim basis by Jose Luis Guiterrez, the vocations director for the Diocese.
In a message sent to parishioners last weekend, McFalls said, "A child will soon be born, and I am the baby's father. I know this comes as a shock to you, and to many a disappointment. I assume full responsibility for my actions and will do all that I can so that my child receives the care and love that he deserves."
