Starfish Are Disappearing Along the Pacific Coast

Starfish are disappearing along the Pacific Coast.

Scientists say they're being killed by a mysterious disease that causes the animals to literally tear themselves apart in a matter of hours.

The Orange County Register reports so-called "sea star wasting syndrome" first broke out in Washington State last summer and now extends from Alaska to Mexico's Coronado Islands.

The disease hit Southern California in February, nearly wiping out the local starfish population.
