School District Kicks Off Fundraiser to Replace Burned Playgrounds

SACRAMENTO -- After an arsonist damaged two playgrounds at local area schools the district is kicking off a fundraiser today to get those playgrounds restored. The arsons were part of a three school melee of fire in the month of July. The suspected fire-starter is now under arrest, but the damage is done. Playground equipment at Caroline Wenzel and John Sloat Elementary schools need replacing. And the district needs $50,000 to pay their insurance deductable.

Gabe Ross, with the district says that all of the money has to come from the general fund. Much has been made of budget issues in the past few years, so every dollar that goes to rebuilding the playgrounds has to come from somewhere else -- another program or service.

The district held their fundraiser kick off at Wenzel on Tuesday morning to raise the money through their non-profit education foundation. Sacramento City Councilman Steve Cohn kicked off the drive with a $1,000 donation.
