Rim Fire Damage in the Millions

Rim Fire Damage in the Millions

A new report estimates that the damage to the ecosystem caused by this year's Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park may have cost the local economy hundreds of millions of dollars.

The nonprofit Earth Economics released the report. It based its findings by assigning monetary values to categories of environmental benefits like air quality, soil retention, biological control, water regulation and more.

Using these figures, the organization estimates the total cost of damage between $102 and $797 million.

The study also shows that the fire decreased land values between $50 and $265 million.

This data was collected in September when the fire was only about 80 percent contained.

It was the third largest fire in state history and burned over 256,000 acres over a period of about two months.
