Prostate Cancer Awareness Event This Weekend

September is "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month," and, waiting to greet it is a local survivor, and former KFBK newsman, who's planned a special event in Elk Grove.

It was an early screening test that let Jim Naylor know he had prostate cancer.

"They usually do it at age 50, but my doctor did it a couple years early. If he had not done it when I was 48, because it was aggressive and fast moving, I would be dying of metastatic cancer," Naylor said.

Naylor knows not all men are so fortunate, so he's put together a Sunday event to raise awareness of the PSA test that could save your life.

"It's a simple blood test. You can get it right with your physical," he said.

The event starts with a 9 o'clock walk at Elk Grove Regional Park.

"It's kind of an intimate event, there's no money to pay, there's no fees, there's no shirts to buy," Naylor said.

Just a chance for those with -- or touched by -- prostate cancer to get together to raise awareness of a disease that will affect one in six men during his lifetime. After the walk, the group will head to the nearby Elk Grove Sports Bar for a Sunday afternoon of fun.

They're going to have a classic car show, a dunk tank, a waterslide for the kids, vendors, a rib-cook off and all proceeds benefit the Elk Grove Food Bank, Naylor said.
