NBA Great Visits Sacramento to Help Train Teachers

An NBA great was in Sacramento today, hoping to help train some great teachers.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spoke before 2,000 educators at the Sacramento Convention Center for the state's first STEM conference on science, technology, engineering and math.

"STEM will be the foundation for the majority of jobs in the 21st Century," Abdul-Jabbar said.

The former Laker towered over everyone while presenting a grant.

State Superintendent Tom Torlakson outlined what the goals for the program are.

"Well our goal is to have the educators here share their best practices, and inspire each other," Torlakson said.

The emphasis goes along with the new Common Core standards. The going consensus is that if you don't have kids interested in STEM by 5th grade, most will lose interest.
