LA Kings Defeat NY Rangers to Win Stanley Cup

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers in Game 5 to win the Stanley Cup tonight at the Staples Center.

The Kings led the series three games to one going into tonight's game, and cinched the cup tonight with their 3-2 victory.

The Kings scored the first goal of the night when winger Justin Williams knocked the puck into the net in the first period.

The Rangers then answered back with a goal of their own in the second period during a power play.

The Rangers scored again with just seconds left in the second period. Center Bryan Boyle put the puck past Jonathan Quick with a shorthand shot.

The Kings then played catch up with a second goal coming in the third period. Drew Doughty fired a shot, which was blocked, but teammate Marion Gaborik poked the puck through the goalkeeper's legs. The goal was scored during a power play on a questionable tripping foul call against New York's Mats Zuccarello.

The score was tied at the end of the third period to force overtime play.

The Rangers missed the opportunity to score during a power play early in the sudden death overtime period. It was tight play, with both teams bouncing the puck off the posts in near scores. But neither team got the puck in the net -- forcing a second overtime period.

The Rangers were again given a power play opportunity in the second OT, and again they came up empty handed.

The LA Kings scored late in the second over time to win the game and the Cup.

The Rangers avoided a sweep by defeating the Kings 2-1 in Game 4 of the series.
