The incident happened around 8 o'clock this morning at the New Folsom Prison:

"An inmate attacked a correctional officer, attempting to repeatedly slash the officer's throat with an inmate manufactured weapon," said Lieutenant Bryan Danahoo.

Donahoo said the officer has been with the correction's department for 15-years, continuing that the officer was taken to an outside hospital by an ambulance for treatment and is fair condition at this time.

The incident is being investigated as an attempted murder.

The inmate, 22-year old Alberto Cortez, is serving 15-years to life for attempted first-degree murder in Los Angeles.
