Hearing Scheduled on Use of Solitary Confinement

The Public Safety Commission will hold hearings into the use of solitary confinement.

Prisoner advocates will have the chance to voice their opposition to solitary confinement during a hearing at the Capital on Wednesday. The hearings were called for by Senator Lori Hancock and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who head the legislative arms of the Public Safety Commission.

"There were concerns about the issues raised in the recent hunger strike that lasted almost two months, and they called for the hearing to see whether the administration has some plans to begin addressing these issues," Carlos Alcala, spokesman for Tom Ammiano said.

Alcala says speakers will range from the Inspector General, a U.C. Irvine professor to a former prisoner and the American Civil Liberties Union.
