Could a Public Market be in Store for Sacramento?

SACRAMENTO -- A local group has plans to build a year-round public market downtown like the Ferry Building in San Francisco, or Pike Place in Seattle.

The Sacramento Public Market would have stands for farmers and small vendors and larger anchor shops and restaurants, as well. We don't have a site yet, and a funding plan isn't in place, but developers are out with a social media campaign to drum up support -- and they're already finding some.

"Sacramento is a foodie town at heart, and downtown is right at the center of it. So a public market makes a lot of sense in that regard," Lisa Martinez with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership said.

Martinez thinks it is a good idea because there are so many tourists and conventioneers who come to Sacramento.

And Sacramento has already established itself as the Farm-to-Fork Capital so a public market would fit in well with that idea, Martinez said.

See possible plans for the market.
