Bill to Require Kill Switches in Cell Phones Voted Down in State Senate

A bill that would have required cell phone manufacturers to install "kill switch" software on their devices has been voted down by the state Senate.

The legislation was proposed as a way of dealing with the explosion of thefts involving mobile phones, but some who opposed the bill didn't buy the argument that it would be a deterrent.

The bill's sponsor, state Senator Mark Leno, hopes to bring the bill before the Senate for another vote in a few weeks.
