47 Million Face Food Stamp Cuts Starting Today

47 Million Face Food Stamp Cuts Starting Today

"My kids aren't gonna go without, but will my kids be as healthy as they should be? No," said one woman on food stamps.

Millions of Americans will receive less in the food stamp assistance beginning today.

"Even though the benefits are going down, the prices are going up. So that makes it even harder with you trying to make ends meet," she said.

This mother-of-three says she will have to buy whatever's on sale and buy food that's close to spoiling because of its reduced price.

"You normally would find fresh vegetables, well now you have to find the canned goods, if you can. The three for $1, two for $1," she said.

The federal government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will cut benefits for more than 47 million people as increases made during the economic crisis expire.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that benefits for a family of four receiving the maximum amount will shrink by $36 a month, or $432 over the course of an entire year.
