The Special Olympics Prepares to Beat the Heat

The Northern California Special Olympics are set for this weekend, and more than 700 athletes are set to compete at the UC Davis campus.

The opening ceremonies of the Games is slotted for tonight, just in time for the heat wave that is descending over California.

Organizers, however, are not overly concerned with the heat, saying that they have experienced hot temperatures during previous summer games, according to spokeswoman Anna Oleson-Wheeler.

But, that doesn't mean that the organizers haven't taken the proper precautions. More than 75 medical staff will be on hand to assist both competitors and spectators if needed, Oleson-Wheeler said. Organizers will also have plenty of water and shade available. There is also a cooling center set where everyone is welcome to escape the heat.
