Residents Protest CalTrans' Confiscation of Yard Signs

Opponents of Governor Jerry Brown's Twin-Tunnels Plan are asking CalTrans to stop confiscating yard signs expressing their opposition.

Restore the Delta members rallied outside CalTrans headquarters this morning.

"We're gathered here today to express our strong opposition to the Brown Administration's selective enforcement of regulations, to silence our opposition to the peripheral tunnels project," Executive Director Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla said.

Warren Smith is a fifth generation farmer who had two signs confiscated from his private property, he said.

"Last Sunday, I felt really good when I put the signs up. I felt finally like I'm really doing something that might make a difference. On Monday, my dog started barking, I walked out there, and geez, here was CalTrans and they were on a mission. And that mission was these signs," Smith said.

Delta residents had been threatened with $10,000 fines if their signs weren't at least 660 feet from roadways. When CalTrans was challenged, they changed the requirement to 14 feet from the right-of-way.
