New Bill Would Stop 'Revenge Porn'

SACRAMENTO -- State Senators today approved a bill that would make it a criminal offense to post sexually explicit images online without the subject's consent.

SB 255 would fine and punish those who electronically distribute sexual pictures without permission.

It would make it a misdemeanor for a person to knowingly publish photos or information with the purpose of humiliating, embarrassing or intimidating another person, said Senator Anthony Canella, who authored the bill.

The bill would give law enforcement the ability to quickly combat what's being called "revenge porn."

Canella says that this is a very serious issue, and that people have committed suicide because of it.

The Senate approved the bill 37-1. It now heads to the Assembly.
